Adams returns to Latics as Head Coach of Youth Team Development Squad

Date published: 02 September 2023

Latics have announced the appointment of Nicky Adams as Head Coach of the Youth Team Development Squad.

Adams is someone who needs no introduction to Latics fans, having joined from Northampton Town in January 2021.

The winger went on to make 67 appearances for Oldham, before retiring from professional football.

The Youth Team Development Squad sits below the main Youth Team, with the squad competing in the National League Youth Alliance.

Players will take part in the full-time programme, with those who impress being given the opportunity to train with the main Youth Team.

Adams was delighted to be back, and is excited by the opportunity of working with young players.

“It’s great to be back, I always thought I might come back to Oldham in some capacity when I left 12 months ago, so to be back as part of the youth team setup is great,” he said.

“I can’t thank Darren, Paul and Phil enough for the opportunity to coach the young lads.

“I spoke to them for the first time yesterday, and I told them that their aim should be to play on the pitch at Boundary Park.

“Not all of them can make it, but if I can help two or three of them make it then I’ve done my job.

“The youth team is so important for a club like Oldham, and they’ve always brought players through, and we want to continue that.”

Academy Manager Paul Murray was delighted to have Adams on board.

He said: "We want to have more ex-players involved in the academy,

"Nicky has played over 650 EFL games, so he ticks that box perfectly.

"Obviously he's a former player too, like myself, so that helps things, he knows the club.

"This is a brilliant move for the club, but also Nicky, in the next step of his career."

Latics' first team are in National League action at Gateshead later today.
