Two quickfire goals in three stunning second-half minutes helped Latics to victory at York and booked them a place in the National League promotion final at Wembley Stadium.
York finished second in the table with 96 points - 23 points ahead of fifth-placed Latics - to give them home advantage, but the Latics proved too strong in a one-sided play-off semi-final at the LNER Community Stadium.
Roared on once again by a boisterous army of travelling fans, Latics opened the scoring after 23 minutes when York goalkeeper Harrison Male's ill-judged throw was miscontrolled by Alex Hunt and the ball fell for striker Joe Garner to fire a first-time effort into the bottom corner.
Micky Mellon's side doubled their lead four minutes into the second half when Mike Fondop played a neat pass into Vimal Yoganathan and he drilled the ball into the bottom corner.
Joe Pritchard flicked home a header from Garner's teasing cross shortly afterwards to seal victory and Latics' spot at Wembley on June 1, when they will face Forest Green Rovers or Southend United for a place back in the English Football League (EFL).
It will be the first time Latics have played at the iconic national stadium for more than three decades, since the 'pinch me' years under legendary manager Joe Royle.
Overjoyed boss Mellon said: "It's fabulous because the club's been through so much and now to get the opportunity to take this football club to Wembley is terrific.
"It's terrific that we've got the opportunity.
"We've levelled the playing field.
"We're not coming away to another team's home ground.
"We've given ourselves a level playing field, to go and have a shot at the ultimate prize to try to get back in the Football League."
