Oldham sign Adam Jones

Oldham's squad-building for 2018 has continued with the capture of 20-year-old second-row forward Adam Jones, who was at Swinton Lions last season.

A Wiganer, Jones came up through the ranks at Salford after playing his boyhood and youth rugby at Chorley Panthers, Wigan St Pat's and Wigan St Jude's, from whom he joined the Red Devils at the age of 14 on a two-year scholarship.

He later had three seasons with Salford's under-19s where he was coached by Peter Carey, who is now the Roughyeds' assistant boss.

He signed for Swinton a year ago and made 19 senior appearances for the Lions, most of them in the Championship.

Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton said: "He is a big, aggressive lad, who played against us for Swinton last season and showed up well. He will bring something a bit different to our pack and I know Scott and Peter (coaches Scott Naylor and Peter Carey) are looking forward to working with him."

A close friend of former Wigan and St Helen's player Dwayne West, Jones is the Roughyeds' seventh new signing for next season.

In total, head coach Naylor has 18 players under contract, 11 forwards and seven backs, for an all-out assault on promotion from League One.

Jones said: "I had a few offers, but Chris (Hamilton) sold me Oldham and convinced me it was the club for me.

"I know Pete (Carey) and a couple of the lads so that was another reason why I wanted to sign for Oldham. Liam Bent also told me what a good club it was.

"I play back-row or loose and I am really looking forward to a new challenge and to getting stuck in."
