Roughyeds' play-off hopes take a big hit

Date published: 20 August 2018

Oldham's play-off hopes suffered a huge blow when they went down 24-18 at Newcastle Thunder after leading 18-6 with a quarter-of-an-hour left.

It was 6-6 at half-time, with a Liam Bent try converted by Paul Crook having opened the Roughyeds account in the seventh minute.

Playing with a strong wind behind them in the second half, however, the visitors quickly added further tries by Lee Kershaw and Luke Nelmes, both converted by Crook.

It remained at 18-6 until the last 15 minutes when Thunder turned the game upside down with a sensational finish which produced two late tries for man-of-the-match full-back Theerapol Ritson and another for schemer-in-chief Remy Marginet, all converted by Marginet.

Thunder's first half try went to former Oldham winger Mo Agoro, another top performer for the home side.

On a day when other results also went against Scott Naylor's men, Oldham were left clinging to fifth position by their finger nails.
