Ten-try Oldham sizzle in the sun

Date published: 15 August 2022

Oldham Rugby League Club kept their slim hopes of getting into the Betfred League One play-offs alive with a 60-6 win at the Vestacare Stadium against London Skolars.

The one team they can push out of the top six, Hunslet, lost 60-18 at Keighley Cougars.

Each with three to play, Oldham are now only four points behind Hunslet and, significantly, they clash at the Vestacare Stadium on Sunday, September 4, in what could well be a play-off decider.

In the meantime, Oldham play Cornwall and Swinton away, while Hunslet play Swinton away and in-form Doncaster at home.

Try-and-goal points differences are also balanced on a knife edge with Hunslet on plus-39 and Oldham on plus-42.

Supporters of both clubs are weighing up each team's play-off prospects, but laid-back Oldham coach Stu Littler said: "We are not looking any further ahead than the next game, which is Cornwall away next Sunday.

"As far as anything else is concerned, what will be will be.

"We'll take it one game at a time and see where it takes us."

As Littler's men sizzled in the sun against Skolars, they caned the Londoners with ten converted tries - two apiece for young on-loan Wigan Warriors starlets Alex Sutton (centre) and Logan Astley (half-back) and other tries by Oliver Field, Tom Spencer, James Thornton, Liam Copland, Dave Hewitt and Kian Morgan.

Martyn Ridyard, Oldham's senior citizen, landed eight conversions from eight attempts before taking a breather near the end, thus leaving his half-back partner Dave Hewitt to convert the last two tries.
