Wigan youngster joins Oldham on loan

Date published: 02 August 2023

Young Wigan half-back Kieran Tyrer has signed for Oldham on loan until the end of the season.

He has played four times for Roughyeds already this season, on dual registration, but he returns to Oldham for a longer period this time, albeit on loan.

The son of former Oldham back Sean Tyrer and the grandson of goalkicking ace Colin Tyrer, who played for Wigan and Leigh, Kieran was born in Leigh 20 years ago and played his early rugby at Leigh Miners.

He went to Widnes Vikings on scholarship, worked his way up to the Academy side, returned to Leigh Miners to play senior rugby in the first team and then signed for Wigan where, in 2022 and also this season, he has been playing Academy and/or reserve team rugby.

Roughyeds supremo Mike Ford, who takes charge of the side on a short term basis until the end of the season, said: “Kieran joins us on loan to the end of the season.

"We havn’t promised him anything for next year, but he’s an addition to our squad for the remaining four league games and then the play-offs.

"He comes at a time when Jordan Paga is under suspension and Jamie Ellis is struggling with a hamstring injury.

"It’s an opportunity for Kieran and it’s good to have him on board.”
