Now Oldham can put all their eggs in the promotion basket

Date published: 04 March 2024

Oldham can concentrate entirely on their priority target this season - promotion from Betfred League One - after a 46-12 defeat at York in the quarter-final of the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup.

They went into the tie without injured forwards Craig Kopczak, Pat Moran and Elijah Taylor with the result that York scored eight tries to two, Including two apiece for Richie Myler and Will Dagger, and were already 34-6 ahead by half-time.

Last Sunday Oldham lost 28-12 at Swinton in the Betfred Challenge Cup, but they have no game next Sunday so their next big challenge is the first league game at Workington on Sunday, March 17.

At York, as at Swinton, they didn’t play up to expectations and were soon well in arrears and chasing the game.

Half-back Myler, son of former Oldham winger Rob Myler and playing his 400th career game, was given the man-of-the-match award and deservedly so after causing havoc in Oldham’s all-too-fragile defence.

Nevertheless, it must have been a close call between him and centre Will Dagger, who scored two tries and landed seven out of his eight conversions for a personal haul of 22 points.

Oldham scored one try in each half - the first by Logan Astley wide out on the left and the second by Owen Farnworth, one of Oldham’s better forwards, up the middle.

In each case, Jamie Ellis kicked the goal.

Team: Astley; C Tyrer, J Turner, O’Keefe, M Turner;  Craven, Ellis;  Farnworth, Aldridge, J Chapelhow, Wardle, Lawton, Wildie. Subs: Paga, Jack Johnson, Josh Johnson, T Chapelhow. 18th man: Agoro.
