Cian Tyrer praised his team-mates after producing the most devastating individual performance from an Oldham player in 64 years, with six tries in a 62-0 win at Hunslet that sent his side top of the League 1 table.
The 23-year-old scored every one of the game’s first six tries, four of them before-half time, in an electrifying display of finishing that saw him become the first Oldham player since 1960 to score a double hat-trick in a single game.
In equalling that milestone hit by the late Ike Southward against Walney Central 64 years ago, Tyrer also narrowly missed equalling the club record of seven tries in a game set by James Miller in 1908.
“I think that’s the most I’ve ever scored in a game, and I’ve got my team-mates to thank for all of them,” Tyrer told Roughyeds TV.
“It felt like every time we went at them we seemed to have joy and that’s down to the quality of players that we have got.”
Tyrer’s stunning display helped Oldham move top of the League 1 table, and was even more remarkable given he may not have even made the squad but for injuries to fellow wingers Mo Agoro and Ben O’Keefe.
Playing on the left wing outside of captain Jordan Turner, Tyrer displayed a ruthless finishing touch and some quick feet, but admits the class of the man inside him deserves huge recognition.
“Jordan is a class player, he has played at the top level throughout his career and you can see in a game like this the quality he has," added Tyrer.
“It is a a lot easier for me being outside him with the talk he gives me, helping me whenever he can.”
The Roughyeds return to Boundary Park to play Cornwall on Sunday hoping the growing fan base that again travelled in number to Hunslet, will not want to miss out on another electrifying display of attacking rugby league.
Tyrer said: “It was an unbelievable performance at Hunslet, we have started well and everyone has gelled and are best mates now.
"That’s how we mean to go on now.”
