Special help for communication problems
Date published: 05 March 2009
Two Oldham schools could help pupils with complex communication problems, such as autism, under proposals going out for public consultation.
Two new bases at North Chadderton and Failsworth schools would deliver the national curriculum and also offer the expertise of outside specialists.
Oldham Council says children with this type of need make best progress in mainstream schools where they receive a broad education, sometimes with the help of specialists.
The council wants parents, pupils, governors and staff to let them council know their views.
A booklet is being sent out to parents at the schools and those who have children with the type of need the additional resources might support, as well as to other interested parties. Copies are available by calling 0161 770 3094.
Views can also be given on the council’s website at www.oldham .gov.uk/bsf
The closing date for responses is Friday, March 13.
Cabinet member for children, young people and families, Councillor Kay Knox, said: “There is a need for increased support for children with severe and complex communication difficulties and the council will use the views of local people to ensure the right level of support.
“These proposals aim to make sure that we have a flexible provision in place that can meet changing needs, support other schools and deliver better opportunities for pupils and their families.”
