ENTREPRENEURIAL children at Crompton Primary School have hatched an eco-plan that will make money.

Youngsters at the Shaw school are rearing chickens in a bid to learn about sustainable living and make the school more eco-friendly.

Six chicks have now hatched in the incubator in the Year 5 classroom. Pupils now aim to keep the chickens on the school field and sell the eggs to raise money.

Head teacher Martin Moore said: “Crompton Primary School has already achieved Green Flag status as an eco-school which recognises the desire that runs throughout school to improving our local environment.

“This project, dubbed ‘Operation Chicken’ by the pupils, is another example of the school’s focus on environmentally-friendly issues.

“This project is a terrific achievement by our Year 5 pupils. With the support of Year 5 teacher Mr Whipps, the project was well-researched by the pupils from its inception and they put forward a strong case to the school governors for it to go ahead.

“All our children will have a chance to look at and work with the chickens and the scheme will provide a wonderful cross-curricular resource for all our pupils to benefit from and enjoy.”
