Earning respect through honesty

FIVE-o'clock alarm calls have not featured yet, but Athletic's performance coach John Harbin has not been afraid to put players through the ringer.

Famed for early starts when working under Iain Dowie, the vastly experienced Harbin has brought his knowledge to bear on the squad this summer, preparing Athletic's charges both physically and mentally for the coming campaign.

Anthony Gerrard tweeted: "When a recovery session turns into . . . spin, football, boxing and then weights! It all helps for the fitness but now I'd like to sleep."

The up-front and honest approach of Harbin, assistant manager Tommy Wright and first-team coach Richie Wellens have been well received by the players, said boss John Sheridan.

"John has taken a few players swimming in the afternoon and I don't know if they will be injured for too long!" joked Sheridan.

"John is brilliant at his job and is very thorough. If you need to work hard, he makes you work hard. At the same time, he will have a laugh and a joke with you.

"John loved his time here the last time he was here and with Tommy and Richie, I feel I have a really good group among my staff.

"Tommy played in the Premier League and so did Richie. John Harbin coached in the Premiership.

"I don't think I need to go on too much about them. They have got respect from the players even though they have only come in recently. The thing I like is that they are honest. They say what needs to be said to your face, which I prefer all day long.

"The players acknowledge that. They can be your best friend as well, but they are not frightened to tell you. I prefer it that way and it builds trust."

The trio of new back room staff are currently with Athletic on a short-term basis, with the arrangement believed to be open to being extended.
