How to drive safely on Oldham's roads in wintry conditions
Date published: 23 January 2019

Ice and snow has caused disruption this morning
With icy conditions on Oldham’s roads, drivers are being warned to take extra care in the wintry weather.
Highways England advises motorists to adjust their driving to suit the conditions and plan ahead by checking the latest forecasts before setting off.
If possible, it is advised that drivers change their route to minimise disruption and only travel if it is absolutely necessary.
They say that unnecessary journeys can block up the roads and cut down on space for getting gritters to areas that need roads treated.
Drivers are being told to stick to main roads wherever possible and to drive with care, respecting the road conditions.
Motorists should avoid steep hills and exposed roads and areas, which are likely to have more challenging conditions.
If it is not possible to avoid a journey, drivers should make the necessary preparations before setting off – which includes clearing windscreens completely of snow, frost or condensation.
The Highway Code says you must be able to see out of every glass panel in your car.
Drivers should also clear snow off the roof of their vehicle before setting off, otherwise it could fall onto the windscreen and impede vision.
If it is snowy, drivers are being told to accelerate gently, using low revs.
It may be necessary to move off in second gear to avoid skidding.
Stopping distances are also larger in slipping conditions, so motorists are advised to leave a bigger gap between themselves and the vehicle in front and to try not to brake suddenly.
