Wendy's Tenerife Diary: "We are getting there!"

Date published: 29 May 2020

Royton-born mother of two Wendy Muldowney has been in severe lockdown in Tenerife, but she insists: "We are getting there!"

"Beaches are open, but with time and space restrictions," added Wendy.

Wendy who has lived in Los Gigantes for more than 20 years, has told the Chronicle that while big shopping centres are open, not all shops are yet doing business.

“We can meet family and friends to a maximum of 15 people," said Wendy.

"Bars and restaurant terraces are open at 50% occupation.

“But we have to abide by is the use of masks as well as social distancing.

"Everyone from aged six years and above has to use them when we leave the house and are going to be in confined spaces.

“As we have been good, stayed at home and been abiding by the rules, we are now beginning to reap the benefits.

“The authorities have said soon we can start to have tourism back and international tourism in July.

"When exactly we aren’t quite sure.

"New information is given on a daily basis as everything depends on the numbers of active cases, new cases and deaths.

“Here in Santiago del Teide, we are doing amazing. We really are.

"I sincerely think that as a holiday resort we will be able to offer quality holidays, where you can be happy and healthy and enjoy yourselves away from home and have confidence in an unknown resort .

“The director of the hotel where I work advised me that hopefully the hotel will open in July, even if it’s at 50% occupation.

"So that is something we can look forward to.

"I love my job and can’t wait to get back to work.

“Saying that though, I did have my holidays booked to come back to tropical Oldham on June 18 but due to airline problems, I have decided to change my flights and return at the beginning of December when I can see the Christmas lights and go watch the pantomime at Oldham Coliseum.

“These are things that I can look forward to soon, hopefully, if you lot  stay home, wash your hands, stay safe and stop the spread of the virus.

"I'm looking forward to seeing all my family and friends on the other side, so take care abnd stay safe folks!”
