Saddleworth celebrated its heritage, with Oldham Council’s permission, as the Yorkshire Day declaration was read out on Uppermill High Street.
The declaration was read by Robert Rogers from Delph as Brenda Cockayne placed the garland on the fabled dialect poet Ammon Wrigley’s statue.
Mr Rodgers said: “It was unofficial and it only took five minutes.
"Nobody was told it was taking place.
"But we have marked the occasion.”
Social distancing was observed on August 1, officially Yorkshire Day.
But due to covid the local village fete was cancelled.
However, it is hoped to continue the tradition next year.
