One of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team’s longest serving members, Dave Allport, is determined to keep an iconic flag flying over Saddleworth’s hills.

He has fought a constant battle with the elements to ensure St George’s flag flies from the tower of landmark St Chads Church Uppermill.

Initially, David sadly watched as the flag disintegrated after falling foul to the local weather. He went back to the drawing board and this time he made the flag stronger by sewing two together, hoping this would make it last. Sadly, it did not last long.

Undeterred and on a mission, he formulated a plan. SAR Products managed to obtain a sample piece of heavy duty white cloth.

Now, with the help of Trans Web Oldham who not only provided the Red material but also allowed Dave to use one of their machines, he has made a stronger, more robust flag.

David and fellow OMRT member Phil Beard, pictured, went up the Church tower, removed the old flag and replaced it with the new one.

Said an OMRT spokesperson: "Many thanks to Dave for taking such pride in our church our community."
