The winners of First Choice Homes Oldham’s (FCHO) annual Budding Neighbourhoods competition have been announced this week.
Customers and community groups entered the popular 2026 online contest in six categories centred around a Community in Bloom theme.
Best Window Box or Hanging Basket went to Jo Penman from Brierley Avenue in Failsworth. Nicholas Ring from Blanche Walk in Oldham won the Best Private Garden and the Best Communal Garden was picked up by Chris and Anita Lowe from Vincent Avenue in Oldham.
In the community section, Yuvanis Foundation’s Middleton Road triumphed in the Best Community Centre Garden. Green Thumb Foundation at Hibbert Crescent in Failsworth picked up The Best Community Garden and OL1 won the Best Community Green Space at FCHO’s Barker Street Community Centre.
“Many congratulations to all those who have won in this year’s competition,” said FCHO project and partnerships officer Ghazalla Ibqal.
“The standard of entries was fantastic, and it was wonderful to see so many residents and community groups taking such pride in their outdoor spaces while helping their neighbourhoods look their absolute best throughout the summer.
“The focus on community and a positive impact in our neighbourhoods was a very important part of the competition, and it worked together with FCHO’s projects to increase flowers and biodiversity in our communities.”
Winner Mr Ring said: “Gardening is something I take a lot of pride in, so winning this award means a great deal. It’s rewarding to see all the hard work recognised.”
And Paul Jarvis from Green Thumb Foundation added: “This award reflects the hard work and dedication of our volunteers and supporters. We’re passionate about creating greener spaces that benefit the whole community.”
All winners receive a £100 love2shop voucher.
The competition ran from 13th July until 1st September.
Entries were judged on pride in the space, overall appearance, community involvement, creativity and positive impact on the neighbourhood.
