Byrne campaign gathering pace

You may have already noticed it, but Athletic fans have started a campaign to 'free Jack Byrne', and it's gathering plenty of momentum on social media.

Dublin-born Byrne (22) made a move to Athletic permanent last January after initially signing on loan from Wigan Athletic, and had hoped to revive his career and international hopes after spells at Manchester City, SC Cambuur, and Blackburn Rovers.

But the exciting attacking midfielder's career has stalled after reportedly being suspended during the summer, along with team-mate Anthony Gerrard - who had his contract with the club terminated last week.

Byrne's continuing absence is clearly frustrating a steadily growing number of Athletic fans of the club, who have taken to Twitter in an effort to get him back playing, using the hashtag #FreeJackByrne.

Athletic have taken just a single point from their opening two games of the season so far, losing to MK Dons before drawing with Forest Green Rovers, with no involvement from Byrne, who scored eight goals in 44 appearances last season.

They also lost 2-0 to Derby County in the League Cup last night, again without Byrne - despite Athletic boss Frankie Bunn only naming six players on the bench.

When asked about Byrne's situation after the match, Bunn said: "I still can't comment on the matter.

"The sooner it's sorted the better, for our sake and for Jack's."
