Latics hammered 4 -1 by local rivals Salford City

Oldham lost out 4 -1 against local rivals Salford, who produced a slick attacking performance at Boundary Park.

Latics had the post-Christmas stuffing knocked out of them when a quick counter-attack down the left saw Brandon Thomas-Asante race away, passing inside to Jake Jervis, whose angled right-footed shot found the net in the 15th minute.

A minute later, Thomas-Asante was released by Craig Conway's through ball and the forward produced a decisive left-footed finish from 10 yards out to double the advantage.

Another smart raid from Salford produced their third goal in the 36th minute. Conway lofted an inviting cross to the far post, where Jervis was on hand to power home a header from close range.

Thomas-Asante netted his second in the 48th minute, arriving in space at the far post to convert a low cross from Ibou Touray.

Oldham's Filipe Morais had his 53rd-minute penalty saved by Chris Neal after the winger had been pulled back in the penalty area by Oscar Threlkeld.

The hosts grabbed a consolation five minutes later when Desire Segbe Azankpo headed in from Zak Mills' cross.
