Latics pegged back by Maidenhead

Date published: 07 October 2022

Latics slid to within just one point of the National League drop zone after they drew 1-1 at Maidenhead in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.

David Unsworth's side opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark when Mike Fondop dispossessed Will De Havilland and slipped Ben Tollitt through for a cool finish.

Latics could have doubled their advantage three minutes after the break, but Daniel Gyollai did well to deny Fondop from close range.

Maidenhead equalised with 15 minutes to go after a penalty was awarded for handball, Charlee Adams slotting home to extend their unbeaten run to three matches.

The hosts pushed for a late winner, but Latics held on to deny the Magpies a third straight win.

Despite Latics' current lowly league position, boss Unsworth was happy to take the positives.

After the game he said: "In terms of attitude, courage, heading the ball and a team defending for their lives, we had that in abundance today.

"The football will come."

Latics return to action next Saturday when they host Chester in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.

Their next league fixture is on Saturday, October 22 when they welcome Yeovil Town.
