Gutsy draw against leaders lifts Latics out of drop zone

Date published: 30 December 2022

A late penalty from recent capture Joe Nuttall earned gutsy Latics a 2-2 draw at home against National League leaders Notts County.

The point gained was enough to lift David Unsworth's men out of the relegation zone.

The 79th-minute spot-kick was a second equaliser for the hosts, who initially fell behind six minutes into the second half via Macaulay Langstaff's finish.

Nathan Sheron brought things level two minutes later, only for Cedwyn Scott to put County back in front another four minutes after that.

Nuttall's subsequent conversion from 12 yards earned Unsworth's Latics a point that saw them move up from 22nd to 20th, above the drop zone on goal difference.

The gaffer saluted the Latics faithful after the game.

"At home we've been brilliant in terms of the fans getting behind us and us giving performances at home," he said.

"Full credit to all the fans today, they were brilliant."

Latics are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Dorking Wanderers.
