Latics' victory condemns Scunthorpe to a second consecutive relegation

Latics picked up four points from their two National League fixtures over the Easter period.

Yesterday (Monday), Latics triumphed 2-0 at Scunthorpe, a result which confirmed the Iron's second successive relegation.

The visitors opened the scoring five minutes before half-time through Devarn Green.

Scunthorpe almost hit back immediately when the ball fell to Will Smith inside the box after a great passing move, but his effort from six yards was well saved by Magnus Norman.

Latics were awarded a penalty when Bassala Sambou attempted to get on the end of a long ball forward and goalkeeper Tom Billson rushed out and brought him down in the area.

Sambou picked himself up and tucked the penalty away to double Latics' lead and end a run of six games without victory, condemning the home side to the drop in the process.

Having seen their 72-year EFL stay ended 12 months ago, it has been a miserable campaign for Scunthorpe, with this their 25th league defeat.

Latics boss David Unsworth said: "It was a very professional job.

"It was all about winning, it was all about getting the job done."

Latics drew 2-2 at home against 10-man Altrincham on Good Friday.

Joe Nuttall put the hosts in front midway through the first half, before a header from sub Sambou with 16 minutes left looked to have wrapped up the points.

Alty defender James Jones was shown a red card in the 79th minute following a foul on Sambou.

Altrincham, though, produced a remarkable late recovery as Maxi Oyedele fired in a long-range volley and Tyrese Sinclair headed in from an 89th-minute corner to snatch a draw.

Unsworth's men return to action on Saturday when they host Maidenhead United.
