After talks with Oldham Council and volunteer team members, the decision has been made to cancel this year's Yanks Weekend showpiece.

The decision was made in the interest of keeping everyone safe, including the villagers of Uppermill and surrounding areas.

The Yanks Weekend was scheduled to have taken place next month.

A spokesperson for the event, officially known as ‘The Yanks are back in Saddleworth’ festival, said: "In True Dunkirk Spirit, we have been working tirelessly over the weeks putting things in place.

"We've been altering formats, revamping the show layout, altering visitor attractions, had endless meetings and looked at new health and safety formats to cover the pandemic and meet the ever-changing government guidelines.

"We did our very best for the traders to help keep businesses alive, but if traders are now looking for a refund, this will be available in the coming weeks.

"Alternatively if traders want to secure their 2021 booking at this year's price, this would save you money due to the price increases for next year.

"We are sorry we can’t deliver your show for 2020, but we hope the see you next year.

"Put the date in your diaries - August 7 and 8.

"This will be the 20th anniversary show.

"As a team we would like to thank you for the support and encouragement from all traders and the wonderful phones calls from all our visitors."

This would have been the 19th year of the event.
