Brand new community six a side football league set to kick off In Oldham

Date published: 25 September 2020

There’s a brand new, Covid safe six a side football league on its way to Oldham next month as the world’s biggest provider the small-sided game is bringing a league to the town.

And, thanks to a unique sponsorship deal, it will be affordable for all.

Leisure Leagues will be kicking off at the Oasis Academy in October, and it will mark a brand new era for community football in the town.

Leisure Leagues Director Tom Nash said: “We are aware that the leagues that are taking place in Oldham aren’t always the best quality, so we say this: join us and get the football that you deserve.”

The league at Oasis will see two divisions to ensure all abilities are catered for, but the winners will be entered into a prize draw that Leisure Leagues do each month, with teams competing for prizes ranging from iPad’s and Wetherspoons vouchers to the top prize of an all-expenses paid trip to see a Bundesliga game, tickets, flights, hotel included worth in excess of £12,000.

Most importantly, though, the price of games will be just £20, as Tom explained: “It is vital to the ethos of Leisure Leagues that our leagues are not just available to the community, but a real part of it.

"Especially in these uncertain times for everyone, we want to be something that people can rely on, which is why we have been so delighted to secure the sponsorship to make the games all £20.”

This opens it up everyone in the local area providing vital physical and mental health benefits to people who need it most.

Six a side football - as long as it is Covid safe - is exempt from the so-called “Rule of Six” that bans mingling of groups, and even after Boris Johnson’s announcements banning indoor sport, the league in Oldham will be unaffected.

Tom added: “Everything is in place, our Covid measures are the strongest in six a side football.

"We just can’t wait to get started.”

The league in Oldham will be subject to a range of regulations including match fees needing to be paid by card, no shaking hands and players not being allowed within a metre of the match official.
