Latics host Championship big guns Bournemouth in the FA Cup third round on Saturday
With Latics just days away from their huge game with Bournemouth in the third round of the FA Cup, a new study has unveiled the Boundary Park outfit as the biggest giant killers in the competition over the last 25 years.
The Giant Killers of the FA Cup, a campaign from BetVictor, has analysed the difference in league positions between clubs in every game from the third round onwards over the last two-and-a-half decades, and has discovered that in total Latics have defeated teams a combined 264 places above them - more than any other club.
Latics' biggest giant kill came against Premier League Fulham two years ago, when they overcame 63 positions to win 2-1 at Craven Cottage, while wins over Liverpool and Manchester City have also been significant giant kills.
A win over Bournemouth would take their total to 323, with 59 places separating the home side and the Championship challengers.
Latics beat Sheffield United to the ultimate giant killers, with the Blades having enjoyed some significant scalps during their time in the EFL, while Tranmere take third place after their excellent run in last year’s competition.
The Top 5 Giant Killers of the FA Cup are:
Team Giant Killer Points
Oldham Athletic 264
Sheffield United 242
Tranmere Rovers 229
Shrewsbury Town 212
Millwall 207
