Following yesterday morning’s (Sunday) dramatic road sweeper blaze on the A62, Oldham Council officials say they are examining the sweeper after a similar incident occurred earlier in the year.
Councillor Amanda Chadderton, Deputy Leader of Oldham Council and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “The sweeper involved was four years old and well maintained.
“It was the only road sweeper of its type and age that we use.
“A number of UK councils also use this model and no safety issues having been flagged by the manufacturer.
“We already have additional sweepers being delivered later this month as part of improving the service for the Don’t Trash Oldham campaign.
“Thankfully, no one was injured and we are in touch with the manufacturers as they’ll be looking into the causes, especially as there was an incident involving this type of vehicle earlier this year.”
